Giving up meat for Lent

First of all I want to say I am probably the least religious person you could meet, however this year I have decided to give up meat for 40 days during Lent. I’ve not by any means done this for religious reasons, but more as a willpower exercise. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love a good Nando’s, or nugs on the way home from a night out, but I’ve been considering going vegetarian for some time now so Lent seemed the perfect opportunity to give it a real go.. unlike the time I lasted 10 days when I was in Year 9 and came home from school and ate an entire pack of ham..

Since moving to Glasgow I’ve noticed every other person I meet here seems to be veggie for one reason or another, so here are mine:

  1. For the animals – an obvious reason but still number 1 on my list
  2. It’s cheaper – let’s be honest, I’m still a student and meat can be pretty pricey
  3. It’s healthier – on the whole, cutting processed meat out can significantly reduce your fat intake
  4. You can be more creative – I’ve now discovered that there’s so much you can add to food that you don’t even need meat

Also, as vegetarianism seems to be growing in popularity, more and more vegetarian only restaurants are popping up, especially this one near my flat which I can’t wait to try and write about when I’ve been!

I know it’s only day 6 but I’ve not even been tempted yet – this one might actually stick! If anyone has any veggie recipes or eateries to recommend in Glasgow or Liverpool please let me know!
